District to receive bids on new stadium lights

In time, Palmerton Area High School's stadium should literally shine brighter than ever.

The district will receive bids for the high school stadium lighting replacement project until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.Superintendent Carol Boyce said the project will install four new steel poles, foundations and lighting fixtures at the stadium.Boyce said a prior insurance inspection conducted by an engineer found the current lights to be "faulty"."Those have been there for a long, long time, and they were in a state where the insurance inspector determined they were not safe," Boyce said. "We would not have been able to use anything unless we fixed the lights."Because the high school football team has several away games scheduled for mid to late-season, Boyce said the fall sports season - namely football and soccer - will not be impacted by the project.Earlier that day, at 10 a.m., the district will accept bids for a water mitigation project to be conducted at three of its facilities.Boyce said that project entails repairs to the building exteriors primarily at Parkside Education Center, as well as Towamensing Elementary and the junior high school. The project will include pointing of brick masonry, sealing against water infiltration, and application of coatings, Boyce said."It will be repointing brick work," she said. "We have to mitigate that so that the structures are safe and water is held outside."Boyce said the work is "part of an ongoing project to make sure the district's infrastructures are well taken care of.""It shouldn't be disruptive of the educational process because it's all external," she said. "We decided to do it all at the same time because it made more sense to bid it all as a unit."Boyce said both of the projects are included in the list of bond projects after the board agreed last fall to borrow $5 million and restructure its 2006 bond issue.Prebid meetings will be held at 10 a.m. for the water mitigation project, and at 11:30 a.m. for the stadium lighting replacement project, on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
