A coordinated police operation arrested five men on a job sight at the Schuylkill Highridge Business Park in Foster Township, Schuylkill County, it was announced by Sheriff Joseph Groody.
About 7:30 a.m. Thursday, a joint operation led by Groody and a number of his deputies, plus detectives from the district attorney's office and patrolmen from Butler and Cass/Foster Townshiips Police Department made the arrests.The men were among the construction workers engaged in work on the Wegman's Warehouse located in the industrial park. They were hired by Stellar Company, of Jacksonville, Fla., which has the general construction contract for the job.A caravan of sheriff vehicles was seen entering Pottsville around 9:30 a.m. and coming to the courthouse and the men were taken into the sheriff's office for processing.Taken into custody were Pedro Sanchez Alvarez, Cesar Contreas Jaramulis, Recado Hernandez, Pablo Hernandez and Roidel Pinetel LIra.Several claimed they left their "papers" in Mexico which gave them legal entrance into the United States. The federal immigration department was notified to begin deportation procedures.Wegmans Retail Service Center, which is putting up an addition to its existing warehouse at the industrial park, recently announced it would be adding 217 jobs when the addition is ready for use. It has stores in Allentown and Wilkes-Barre but none in Schuylkill County.Wegmans is adding 500,000 square feet of space to its existing 415,000 square foot retail center. The new jobs are expected to be created in three years.
