Police, citizens quick to catch illegal scrappers in Hometown

Around 1:40 p.m. Monday, Rush Township Police responded to a wooded area off of Progress Avenue in Hometown after receiving a report of two males attempting to steal copper from a cell phone tower owned by SBA Towers.

Employees with the Tamaqua Water Company, who also reported the incident, chased the two males while police responded.The two males were caught by police approximately 40 minutes later in the Sky-View Memorial Park.Police arrested Justin A. Boyer, 22, of New Ringgold, and Thomas J. Kehl, 21, of Mahanoy City, on charges of criminal attempt to commit theft, criminal conspiracy to commit theft both felonies, possessing instruments of crime, criminal mischief and trespass; all misdemeanors. Boyer was also found to have a marijuana bowl and synthetic marijuana on his person.Both were arraigned by District Justice Stephen J Bayer, Tamaqua, and released on $10,000 bail.A green Jetta was also impounded.Nesquehoning and Tamaqua police assisted township police.
