How we voted

An interesting phenomenon in Pennsylvania gubernatorial voting followed suit Tuesday in Carbon, Schuylkill and Northampton counties.

That's because voters in those three counties once again remained consistent with a voting mode they have been in for the past eight elections for governor voters in each of those counties, which are all contiguous, have voted "with" the eventual winner of the gubernatorial election every time since at least 1986.Here is a regional county-by-county breakdown of vote totals in the race between Democrat Tom Wolf, the winner, and Republican Gov. Tom Corbett:Carbon County: Wolf, 9,156; Corbett, 7,855Schuylkill: Wolf, 20,541; Corbett, 17,167Monroe: Wolf, 19,229; Corbett, 14,443Northampton: Wolf, 21,577; Corbett, 16,841Lehigh: Wolf, 42,545; Corbett, 34,997In a published article Monday, Harrisburg Patriot Staff Writer Malawskey, who revealed this interesting statistic on ourregional counties, called the three counties "The bellwethers."His article carried the headline "What do voters in eastern PA know that the rest don't?"In the article, which appeared online at

www.pennlive.com, Malawskey admits thisphenomenon goes back "at least" eight election cycles, saying that is as far back as he researched it.Malawskey writes the voters in Carbon, Schuylkill and Northampton counties were "a perfect seven-for-seven" before Tuesday's General Election in voting for the eventual statewide winner of the governor's races. Those included: 1986, Bob Casey over Bill Scranton; 1990, Bob Casey over Barbara Hafer; 1994, Tom Ridge over Mark Singel; 1998, Tom Ridge over Ivan Itkin; 2002, Ed Rendell over Mike Fisher; 2006, Ed Rendell over Lynn Swann; and 2010, Tom Corbett over Dan Onorato. After Tuesday, the streak went to eight-for-eight.
