Tony Kuhn, of Clamtown Troop 755, restored a retired mail deposit box for depositing retired U.S. flags as an Eagle Scout project.
Tony, 17, of Ephrata, who will be a senior at Ephrata High School in the fall, decided to place the mail deposit box by the West Penn Township Fire Company right next to its flagpole.
He said he chose this project because he felt there was a need within the community, and added not everyone has the ability to properly retire their American flags or the knowledge of how to. Now, the flags can be respectfully retired as they should be.
Tony thanked the West Penn Township Lions Club, which donated the postal box; his fellow scouts at Clamtown Troop 755 for their help and brotherhood; his scout leaders, especially Damon Krall and Blake Tharp for always helping him and pushing him to achieve Eagle rank; his uncle Clint Schock and family for all of their help preparing the site; the West Penn Fire Company for allowing him to place the box on their property; Connor Evans, his cousin, who allowed him to share the flagpole area which was his Eagle Scout project several years ago; and his family.
Supervisor Tim Houser complimented Tony on his project during last week’s board of supervisors meeting.
“I think it looks fabulous,” Houser said. “We are going to have a ceremony.”
The official flag retirement ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at the fire company following its breakfast.
