Traffic signal upgrades coming

A project to improve traffic signals along Palmerton’s main thoroughfare could be completed in 2025.

Borough Manager Autumn Canfield discussed the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project scoping meeting, and upgrading light poles, with borough council last week.

Canfield said improvements are slated to the light pole at the intersection of Third Street and Delaware Avenue.

“The borough obtained an ARLE (Automated Red Light Enforcement) grant, and is currently working on permitting through PennDOT,” Canfield said. “They informed us of a project they are working on to

improve the other signals on Delaware Avenue, with an estimated construction year of 2025.”

In December 2021, the borough received nearly $330,000 in state funds for traffic safety improvements through PennDOT, which distributed about $12.9 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funding to 22 municipalities statewide to fund 28 safety projects.

Palmerton received $329,398 for replacement of all existing signal equipment at the offset intersection of Third Street and Delaware Avenue to bring the intersection up to current PennDOT safety standards.

Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows red-light running has been an issue.
