Army Air Force veteran turns 90

James "Jim" Carbon Berger of Kunkletown recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born Feb. 12, 1925.

Jim is a resident of Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Homes in Kunkletown.When Jim was 18 he entered the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a radioman/gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress Bomber from 1944-1945.Ranked as a technical sergeant, he was awarded the Air Medal and Certificate of Valor for engaging in aerial combat during bombing sorties over Austria, Germany and Italy during the World War II.He worked for Bell Telephone as a repairman and lineman for many years after the war, in his hometown of Philadelphia. He then retired to Kunkletown in the 1970s.Jim actively pursued his hobby of ham radio for decades, contacting every country in the world except North Korea.Jim is a widower, having outlived two wives, and is a member of Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Trachsville.His older sister, Phyllis Hemmer, lives in Indiana.
