Few Carbon municipalities had contests
Only Jim Thorpe, Franklin Township and Lansford had contested races where more candidates were vying for seats on the board during the May primary.
Results are as follows:
Banks Township: Charles J. Schalles received 107 votes on the Democratic ticket for a six-year term in Banks Township; while Richard Hornick Sr. received 42 Republican votes.
Joseph Bodner received 104 Democratic votes for the six-year auditor term. There were no candidates on the Republican ticket.
Beaver Meadows: Only William M. Curilla Jr. was on the ballot for a four-year term. Curilla, a Republican, received 45 votes. There were also 71 write-ins on the Republican ticket.
Bowmanstown: Kara Scott, a Democrat, received 47 votes for a four-year term on council; while Republicans Pamela Leiby and Norman A. Engle Jr., received 56 and 49 votes respectively. There were three positions up for election on council.
East Penn Township: Dennis L. Pearson, a Democrat, received 127 votes for a six-year term on the board of supervisors; while John M. Strockoz, a Republican, received 286 votes. There were two positions available.
There were no candidates for the auditor six- or four-year positions.
East Side Borough: Elizabeth Berger, a Democrat, received 14 votes to secure a four-year term on council; while Republicans Rudolph C. Schoch and John Cepiel received 19 and 16 votes. There are three spots available.
Franklin Township: There were no Democratic candidates for one six-year term on the board of supervisors. On the Republican ticket, Leroy W. Kemmerer Jr. received 329 votes, while Kelsea S. Weber received 87.
There were no candidates for the six-year auditor position.
Jim Thorpe: There was a contested race on the Democratic ticket for three four-year terms on borough council. Story on page 4. Kidder Township: There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket for either a six-year term on the board of supervisors or a six-year term as the auditor. On the Republican ticket, there were two spots available. Louis Pantages received 123 votes, while Noel Torres received 118 votes.
Lansford: Borough Council had four seats up for grabs with a contested race on the Republican ticket.
On the Democratic ticket, Mary Soberick received 149 votes, while Joseph Butrie received 143 votes.
On the Republican side, Jack B. Soberick was the top vote-getter with 184, followed by Bruce Markovich, 134; Michele R. Bartek, 131; John M. Turcmanovich, 106; William J. Chuma, 104; and Joseph Lyons, 92.
Lausanne Township: There were no candidates for a six-year term on the board of supervisors, as well as a six-year, four-year and two-year term as auditor.
Lehigh Township: There were no candidates for either six- or two-year terms on the board of supervisors; nor for the six-year or four-year term as auditor.
Lehighton: Borough Council had four seats up for grabs. On the Democratic ticket, Grant Hunsicker received 217 votes. There were 73 write-in votes. There were no candidates on the Republican ticket for either four four-year terms and one two-year term on borough council. There was also one seat open for a two-year term. Democrat Rebecca Worthy received 217 votes.
Lower Towamensing Township: The board of supervisors had one seat open. On the Republican ticket, Jay Mullikin received 95 votes, followed by Mike Takerer with 79, for a four-year term. Mullikin received 161 votes on the Republican ticket for a six-year term.
Mahoning Township: The board of supervisors had one seat open. On the Republican ticket, Myron “Zeke” Blahy received 257 votes, followed by Mark Schwalm with 229 for a six-year term on the board of supervisors. There were no candidates on the Democratic side. There were no candidates for a six-year term as auditor.
Nesquehoning: Borough council had four four-year terms open. On the Democratic ticket, Bruce Nalesnik received 251 votes. There were 64 write-in votes. On the Republican ticket, Lois Corby Kuba received 269 votes. There were 78 write-ins. There were no candidates for a two-year term on the Democratic or Republican tickets.
Packer Township: The board of supervisors had one seat open. On the Republican ticket, Terry Davis received 112 votes, followed by Robert Bryan, 68; and Paul Bray, 67; for a six-year term. There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket, nor were there any candidates on either ticket for either a six- or two-year term for auditor.
Palmerton: Borough council had three four-year terms. On the Democratic ticket, Holly Hausman-Sell received 210 votes; while on the Republican ticket, Terry Lee Costenbader led with 233 votes; followed by Andrew Hollywood, 187 and Raberta Hans, 182. There was one candidate on the Republican ticket for a two-year term on council. William Gallagher received 251 votes. There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket. There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket for tax collector, however Raquel Lutton received 262 votes for the position on the Republican ticket.
Parryville: There were no candidates for either the four-year or two-year terms on council in either Democratic or Republican tickets.
Penn Forest Township: There was only one candidate for a six-year term on the board of supervisors. James Denier, a Republican, received 438 votes. There were no candidates for either a six-year or two-year term for auditor.
Summit Hill: Four four-year seats were open on borough council. On the Democratic ticket, it was a close race, with only a few votes separated the candidates, with Karen Ruzicka receiving the most at 296. She was followed by Lacey Gonzalez, 289; Michael Kokinda II, 282; and David Wargo, 276. On the Republican side, Marlene Basiago led with 258 votes; followed by Sandra L. Dellicker, 161; and Alan Kruslicky, 152.
For the two-year seat, Kokinda won the Democratic ticket with 114 votes; followed by Ruzicka, 93; Gonzalez, 79; and Wargo, 60. Basiago also was the top Republican vote-getter for the two-year term, garnering 187 votes; followed by Kruslicky, 56; and Dellicker, 48.
Towamensing Township: There was one race in the township on the Republican ticket for a two-year term as tax collector. Susan Marques won, beating out Tom Heinick, 251 to 78.
There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket for supervisor, auditor or tax collector.
Guy Seifert, a Republican, received 259 votes for a six-year term on the board of supervisors.
Weatherly: Paul J. Hadzick will serve as the borough mayor as he was the only candidate on either ballot. Hadzick, a Republican, received 185 votes. There were no candidates on the Democratic ticket.
Joseph A. Thomas, a Democrat, received 96 votes for a four-year term on council; while Republicans Michael A. Bellizia Jr. and Joseph M. Cyburt, received 191 and 159 votes respectively.
Weissport: Only one candidate was on the ballot in the four-year term council race. Arland F. Moyer Sr., a Democrat, received 11 votes.
