Summit Hill official makes pitch for pickleball in borough

Pickleball, a game gaining popularity, might soon be coming to Summit Hill.

Kathy Gieniec, chairman of the Recreation Commission, asked the borough council for permission to have pickleball events in the Hilltop Community Center.

The council indicated support and told Gieniec to get more information to them, including dates when such games could be played.

Gieniec told the council interest has been shown by some residents to play pickleball, a type of tennis game but with a smaller court.

She said she spoke to Thomas Evans, recreation director in Lehighton, who told her it is so popular there that events are held regularly.

She said she will ask Evans to come to Summit Hill to help organize pickleball games.

“Both the elderly and young people play it,” she said, adding that the Recreation Commission will purchase all the equipment.

She said there has been no date established because she wants to discuss it more with Evans.
