Best small towns list highlights attractions
WorldAtlas has released its list of “10 Best Small Towns In The Poconos to Chill Out.”
While the Poconos are considered to encompass the counties of Monroe, Carbon, Wayne and Pike, the borough of Tamaqua - which is in Schuylkill County - has made the cut.
Other area locales also made the list, including Jim Thorpe, Palmerton and White Haven.
“People frequent the Poconos for hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting and boating. Several towns in the Poconos offer respite from the adventurous activities while offering jaw-dropping views of the natural surroundings,” WorldAtlas noted in its announcement. “If you are looking for a chill day out in one of the most gorgeous places in the U.S., look no further than these 10 towns.”
In its article, WorldAtlas provides information on each of the towns.
“Tamaqua lies in a valley basin dotted by lowlands and high dwellings. Historical influences are everywhere, as evidenced by the number of museums and old buildings. The place is up and coming as a popular destination and offers art classes at the Tamaqua Community Art Center as well as a day-and-night driving range,” WorldAtlas notes.
As for Jim Thorpe, WorldAtlas references its fall foliage and Olde Time Christmas festivals, along with the Asa Packer Mansion, Old Jail Museum and Lehigh River.
“Lastly, no Jim Thorpe trip is complete without a visit to athlete Jim Thorpe’s grave, which lies on the outskirts of the town,” according to WorldAtlas.
The Appalachian Trail crosses the Lehigh River, less than 2 miles south of Palmerton, WorldAtlas notes. The borough is also home to Palmerton Community Park, Blue Mountain Pub and the Halls of Horror event.
WorldAtlas notes that White Haven boasts two state parks. Lehigh Gorge State Park offers whitewater rafting, fishing and hiking, and Hickory Run State Park, where visitors can go boating or hiking.
Rounding out the Top 10 are Hawley, Milford, Honesdale, Stroudsburg, Tannersville and Mount Pocono.
