Firm hired to monitor prison air system
Schuylkill County prison inmates will be assured of having fresh air.
County commissioners last week agreed to hire H & H Service Company, of Mechanicsburg, for $12,071 to provide planned maintenance of five Greenheck roof top air system units at the prison.
The contract runs from April 12 through Dec. 29.
In other matters, commissioners approved a $164,830 contract with Waste Management to collect refuse from the courthouse, the Human Services building, Adult Probation, the prison, the Mahanoy Senior Center, and 252 Industrial Park Road, St. Clair.
The contract runs from May 1 to April 30, 2026.
Commissioners reappointed Micah Gursky, director of development at St. Luke’s Miners campus, Coaldale, and Bud Quandel, president of Quandel Enterprises, to the NEPA Alliance board of directors for two-year terms beginning July 1.
Commissioner George F. Halcovage Jr. asked that an item be added to the commissioners’ meeting agenda for today to revisit the March 8 sale of two county owned parcels in Porter and Tremont townships.
The total 975.5 acres was sold to the Nature Conservancy of Pennsylvania for $1.375 million.
The Conservancy bought it on behalf of the state Game Commission.
Halcovage opposed the sale. Commissioner Gary J. Hess and Commissioners Chairman Barron L. Hetherington voted in favor.
“We had other people who are interested in the land we’re looking at to sell to the Nature Conservancy,” Halcovage said Wednesday.
He said people are interested in leasing the land for the mineral rights.
“I had Tremont Township reach out to me, there are other people that are interested if we are looking to sell that piece of ground,” Halcovage said.
Hetherington rebuked Halcovage.
“Why bring it back up for a vote?” he asked. “We discussed it. We met with the people. Once again, it was on the agenda, we voted. It was 2-1.”
Halcovage said he checked with First Assistant County Solicitor Glenn T. Roth as to the status of the agreement of sale.
“It’s only a draft agreement that’s been done so far,” Halcovage said. “We still do not have a completed contract with the Nature Conservancy.”
