Carbon testing election equipment

Carbon County is hoping a new step will help voters’ confidence in the election process.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the county will conduct the public tests of the central tabulating equipment for accuracy testing before the upcoming May primary.

“This testing is a series of preelection steps intended to ensure that ballot scanners, ballot marking devices and any component of the county certified voting system are properly configured and in good working order before being used in the election,” he said.

This testing happens before each election to ensure the accuracy of the equipment, but Lukasevich the new step is that this testing will be livestreamed for the public for the first time ever.

He said this will provide transparency and increase confidence in the voting process, “particularly the technology that facilitates, fair, transparent elections, while maintaining the principle of secrecy of the ballot.”

The testing will occur in the elections bureau, located on the first floor of the 44 Susquehanna St. building.

Lukasevich is the only current commissioner who sits on the county election board because he did not file his petition to run for the primary election.
