Lehighton asked to not use sewage sludge

Lehighton has been asked to oppose the use of treated sewage sludge as fertilizer for landscaping or agriculture.

Two members of Save Carbon County shared their stance with Lehighton Borough Council on Monday.

Roy and Linda Christman, of Towamensing Township, asked council to adopt a resolution that would support better regulations of the sludge.

“Currently, local governments have no control over this,” Roy Christman said. “You will join in with other (municipalities) in Carbon County to call upon the state to regulate what we believe is a harmful and dangerous substance.”

Linda Christman, who serves as president of Save Carbon County, said that if they receive enough support, the group would carry its concerns to the treatment plants for Allentown and Bethlehem.

“This is not a problem in Carbon County,” Linda Christman said.

Save Carbon County is opposed to using sewage sludge as fertilizer for landscaping or agriculture, and has approached various municipalities about the subject.

The group has asked municipalities to adopt a resolution that would support better regulations of the sludge.
