Monroe woman fatally shot

A Saylorsburg woman is dead after being shot Wednesday evening in her daughter’s Long Pond home during an argument with her daughter’s fiance.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police were dispatched at 10:27 p.m. to a home at 172 Shannon Drive for a report of a gun shot wound.

Reports were that a woman had been shot and was not breathing. Upon arrival, police encountered Damien Hoehler, 43, of Long Pond, at the front door.

Hoehler was secured for officer safety. Police entered the residence and found Diane Strohl, 59, of Saylorsburg, on the first floor with a wound to her upper chest.

Police found a firearm in the general area, and then located other family members in the basement of the home who were uninjured.

Police began live-saving measures on Strohl; however, she succumbed to her injury.

The initial investigation revealed that Hoehler is the fiance of Strohl’s daughter, and lives at the home.

Hoehler was intoxicated and handling a gun, police said, which led to an argument between Strohl and Hoehler that became physical and the firearm discharged, hitting Strohl.

Hoehler was taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing.

Hoehler has been charged with two counts each of recklessly endangering another person and simple assault, along with one count each of criminal homicide and possessing instruments of crime.

Hoehler is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 23 before District Judge Danielle Travagline.
