Bowmanstown approves cable agreement

Bowmanstown has adopted an ordinance related to the cable franchise agreement with Blue Ridge Communications.

Borough council on a 5-0 vote Tuesday approved the measure. Councilwomen Donna Winter and Candace Rodrigues were absent.

Last month, council agreed to advertise the ordinance for enactment at this month’s meeting.

Council needed to advertise and adopt the ordinance in order to adopt the Blue Ridge Communication TV franchise agreement.

Councilman William Ravert noted that the residents’ cable bills will not go up with the adoption of the cable franchise ordinance/agreement because the borough was not imposing a franchise fee.

In January, council tabled the ordinance. At that time council made a motion not to assess a cable franchise fee, with all in favor.

Councilman Darren Thomas said at that time he believes it’s discriminating.

Mayor Zach Snyder said at that time it is a back door tax.

Resident Ben Price said that it’s not hidden, as it’s on the bill.

Resident Robert Sikorsky said he agrees with Thomas that it is discriminatory.

In December, council adopted the Blue Ridge Communications TV Franchise Agreement.
