During the Summit Hill Council meeting Monday:
• The borough hired Brian Reeser to lock down the community center and mop the floors after events. He will be paid $75 per event.• The council was informed that the recreation commission received a $40,000 grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program for the Ginder Field Development Project.Councilman Billy O'Gurek commended the commission for its work on obtaining the grant.• A letter was received from St. Gabriel's Club complaining that school buses are dropping students off in front of the club on Hazard Street instead of at the designated bus stop on Market Street.John O'Gurek said the bus drivers "have no business" dropping the students off in front of the club instead of going around the corner to the Market Street bus stop. The council informally agreed to have the buses comply with the Market Street stop.Council President Michael Kokinda said a problem also exists at the bus stop on Ludlow and Elm Street. The concern is that buses are stopping at the ambulance station driveway. He said there's no problem with the bus stop being there, but the driveway for the ambulance station should not be blocked.• A letter was received from Mr. and Mrs. Richard Orsulak regarding the dangers of the intersection of Route 902 and Mountaintop Road.Chief Fittos said although the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has posted warning signs near the intersection stating speed limits of 15 and 25 mph, these are not enforceable "because they are recommended speeds." He said the actual designated speed on the highway is 45 mph.• PennDOT plans to resurface parts of Pine Street (Route 902), but not between Amidon Street and Lehigh Street. The council said the resurfacing won't happen until new inlets are replaced and new sewer pipes are laid between Amidon and White streets.Kokinda said the sewer authority had been apportioned over $30,000 for the work but didn't complete it. Steber said the money is being returned to the borough.According to Kokinda, the work will cost in excess of $35,000.The council will speak with borough engineer Mike Tirpak to determine what should be done to have the project finished.• A Street Encroachment and Opening Ordinance was adopted mandating that any excavation done on borough streets requires that the streets be repaired to PennDOT specifications.• Councilman David Wargo said about 21 people attended a recent Crime Watch organization meeting.Fittos said another meeting will be held on March 9 during which patrol procedures will be discussed.• In one final matter, Steber said a "gift card fund drive" has been established for two families who sustained heavy fire damage at their residences last week. Anyone wanting to contribute a gift card from any business can drop them off at the borough hall. The funds collected will be split between the two families. The Salvation Army was praised for its on-scene assistance to the firefighters and the victims of the fire.
