Lehighton plans to consider the creation of a horse-drawn carriage ordinance.
Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky broached the matter to borough council at Monday’s meeting.
However, Public Works Superintendent Kris Kunkle said that there have been issues with people not cleaning up the horse waste.
Abelovsky said that while she isn’t against having horse-drawn carriages, she just wants them to follow the rules.
Kunkle said he’s seen carriages in neighboring Jim Thorpe, but there is something behind the horses to catch the waste.
Councilman Ryan Saunders said he believes the borough should have some sort of permit program to make sure certain criteria are followed.
Saunders added that he believes it’s terrible that the borough has to put up an ordinance to tell people to clean up.
“I’m definitely in favor of drafting a horse-drawn carriage ordinance,” Saunders said. “I think it’s a great idea.”
Last year, several horse-drawn carriage rides were offered in the borough as part of several events, including Rocktoberfest.
