Carbon County election board waits on commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners make up the voting members of the county election board, except when they are up for election.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners voted to establish the positions of three election board members at $100 per day, effective March 2, but asked that the salary board meeting be recessed until this week.

The reason is because petitions for candidates need to be filed today, and at the time of the vote, the three sitting board members had not yet filed their petitions to run.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich asked solicitor Robert Frycklund if the county needed to vote on the matter at that time, or if they should wait since it wasn’t clear if all three of them, or none of them would be running for reelection at that time.

Frycklund said that establishing the positions were OK and that recessing the meeting until this week would then allow the board to take further action to adjust that motion if necessary.

The salary board will reconvene during the weekly meeting of the commissioners on Thursday morning and will either leave the motion as is, or modify it if necessary.

In addition, the county election board meeting, that was slated for Thursday, has been canceled and will be rescheduled.

This is because the courts will need to appoint election board members in place of the commissioners if they have chosen to run again.
