Group to rally against zoning change in JT

A demonstration by members of Save Carbon County, a nonprofit environmental group, will be held on Thursday morning concerning the proposed change of zoning at Mauch Chunk Lake and to urge Jim Thorpe Borough Council to deny the zoning change proposal at its meeting Thursday night.

The group will gather at the Carbon County Courthouse Annex at 10:30 a.m. to bring attention to the proposal to build up to nine houses with on-site septic 1,000 feet from Mauch Chunk Lake. At approximately 11 a.m., the group will march to Josiah White Park where they will hold a short rally.

“This proposal should have been killed months ago,” said Linda Christman, the group’s president. “In fact, it should have never been given any serious consideration.”

Christman said that the property owner purchased the lakeside property knowing that the Special District Zoning would not permit the construction he has proposed.

“He shouldn’t be able to change rules that have served to protect the watershed for all of Jim Thorpe to benefit only one property owner,” Christman said.

Jim Thorpe council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Hall and will consider the next steps regarding the zoning change proposal.
