Woman charged with DUI after crash
A Lehighton woman has been charged with driving under the influence which led to a crash in Lehigh Township.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jonathan Roth in the case against Tanya Piccolo:
At around 5:35 p.m. Nov. 13, Lehigh Township Police were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash in the 4800 block of Lehigh Drive, Route 248.
Roth made contact with Piccolo, 33, who was in the driver’s seat of her Hyundai Sonata, and had difficulty spelling her name.
Piccolo said she saw an animal and swerved.
Roth spoke to the witnesses behind Piccolo and they said there was no animal in the roadway.
Piccolo was transported by EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg.
Roth received a phone call from the security department at the hospital indicating they had found drug paraphernalia on Piccolo when she arrived in the emergency department.
Piccolo had two syringes, several wax papers and smaller packages with white residue. There were five wax papers with “cold Rack” stamped on them.
Roth entered the room in the emergency department and confirmed that Piccolo was the same woman that he observed in the vehicle at the crash scene.
Piccolo agreed to a blood test.
Blood reports showed Piccolo had the following in her blood: 6.5 ng/mL amphetamine, 33 ng/mL methamphetamine; 53 ng/mL clonazepam, and 94 ng/mL 7 amino clonazepam.
Medical records for the driver of the other vehicle listed several injuries that resulted in him spending several days in the hospital and requiring surgery.
Piccolo faces charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI; aggravated assault by vehicle; DUI: controlled substance - impaired ability - second offense; DUI: controlled substance, schedule 2 or 3 - second offense; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; failure to keep right; and disregard traffic lane.
She is in the Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 monetary bail.
She was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Monday before District Judge Robert A. Hawke of Walnutport, but it was continued.
