Slatington man charged with sexual assault

A Slatington man accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a sleeping woman is in the Schuylkill County Prison, Coaldale police said.

Coaldale police filed several rape-related charges against Braheim Owens, 40, following the Feb. 26 incident.

According to police, officers arrived at the Ridge Terrace residence around 4:30 a.m. and were approached by Owens, 40.

Owens told officers that they were there for him since he and his girlfriend had an argument and she told him to leave. Police placed Owens into the back of their cruiser while they spoke to the woman.

She told police that she and Owens had been dating after they met at church. She said it was the first time that Owens was at her home, and that she went to bed at approximately 1 a.m.

Police said the woman woke up at 4 a.m. to find Owens sexually assaulting her.

Police said the woman grabbed her pants and keys and ran to a neighbor’s home because she was scared for her life. She told police she sent messages to Owens through Facebook Messenger telling him to leave but he refused. She then called police.

Owens was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua, on charges of rape of an unconscious victim, sexual assault and incident assault. He could not produce the $50,000 cash bail and was sent to prison.
