Man charged with assaulting police dog, resisting arrest

A Monroe County man has been charged with assaulting a police dog and resisting arrest.

At 9:12 a.m. Feb. 18, Pocono Mountain Regional Police were made aware of a burglary, flight, and a stolen vehicle incident in Pocono Township.

As part of that investigation, the Pocono Mountain Regional Police responded to a home in the 500 block of Graham Lane in Tobyhanna.

Officers located a stolen vehicle there and the suspect, Matthew Katona, 32, of East Stroudsburg, was inside the residence.

There was an active felony arrest warrant out of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for Katona.

Katona was sleeping on a couch.

Police stood at the doorway with a police K-9 and ordered Katona to show his hands on multiple occasions.

Katona refused to comply with orders or show his hands.

Police sent in the dog, and Katona then fought with the K-9. Katona struck the dog, choking it and attempted to smother it.

During this time, officers also engaged Katona and were able to take him into custody.

Katona was transported the hospital for treatment of injuries.

No injuries were reported by the officers or the K-9.

Katona has been arraigned on $5,000 bail. A preliminary hearing March 1 before District Judge Danielle Travagline.
