Tamaqua working to remove blighted properties

When the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership purchased a former garage at 219 Cedar St. in July, it had already been collapsing.

“It was a dangerously blighted building,” said Micah Gursky, the partnership’s executive director.

Gursky provided a photo of the inside of the building, which shows how the building’s roof had crashed onto the floor.

“This is not mid-demolition,” Gursky explained of the snapshot taken this past summer.

Now, however, the building has really come down - only this time, it was at the hands of demolition crews. All that remains is a pile of rubble.

When the partnership purchased the property, it also picked up the former - and blighted - U.S. Towing Service at 201 Cedar St. and a 1.2-acre junkyard on South Greenwood Street.

All were bought from the same owner.

“The goal is to eliminate blight and dangerous properties in the community - and to re-purpose them,” Gursky said shortly after the purchase.

There are no immediate plans for the recently leveled building.
