Benefit Saturday for family of Palmerton Scoutmaster
A benefit in memory of a deceased Palmerton Scoutmaster will be held Saturday.
The Hoffman Family Benefit, in memory of Mathias Hoffman, Pack 209 Scoutmaster, will take place at the Palmerton Rod and Gun Club.
It is being hosted by Pack and Troop 2009. Doors open at 11 a.m. Bingo starts at noon. The cost is $30 at the door, and $25 for those who preorder.
Participants do not need bingo tickets to participate in the basket raffle. A 50/50 will be called at the end of bingo. There will also be food and baked goods for purchase.
Basket and gift card donations are being accepted through Friday.
Katie Eckhart, one of the Cub Pack leaders, said the benefit is being run by all of the different leaders within the Cub Pack and the Boy Scout troop.
“Mathias was in charge of the entire pack; he was in charge of getting our fundraisers out there,” Eckhart said. “He helped organize when the boys were able to go to Archery Addictions this summer, a fishing contest at Blue Mountain Fish and Game; he was kind of our spokesperson out in the community for us, (and) he did so much within the pack as well.”
Eckhart said that Hoffman lived in Palmerton, and grew up in Slatington.
She said Hoffman passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 28. He was 40 years old.
Eckhart said Hoffman and his wife, Kristie, have two young boys who attend elementary school in Palmerton.
She said all of the leaders gathered the night that Hoffman passed to figure out what it could do for the family.
“We knew getting through the holidays was going to be (difficult) enough with everything going on in the world,” Eckhart said. “We had a great outpouring of support for the family of people reaching out to make meals, giving out Christmas presents.”
Eckhart said the benefit will seek to assist the family in their time of need.
“His wife has not gone back to work yet,” she said. “This is really going to help the family.”
