2022 in review: Dems Shapiro, Fetterman win Pa.
The November General Election proved Pennsylvania is a “blue” state as the Democrats scored major victories over the Republicans in the top state and federal offices races.
Democrat Josh Shapiro, the current Attorney General of the Commonwealth, assured the Democrats occupancy of the Governor’s Mansion as he defeated Republican Doug Mastriano by nearly 800,000 votes, meaning the party will hold the governor’s office for 12 straight years, eight of them being under current Gov. Tom Wolf.
In the U.S. Senate race, current Lt. Gov. John Fetterman pulled off the biggest win in the country, scoring a 260,000-plus win over Donald Trump candidate Mehmet Oz, helping the Democrats to maintain control of the chamber.
The Democratic victories helped solidify the party’s hold on the top offices in the state and country and came in the aftermath of President Joe Biden’s state triumph over Trump in 2020.
Locally, Schuylkill and Carbon counties found themselves in the minority of statewide voters, as those two counties in the Times News coverage area backed Mastriano and Oz. The other counties in our area – Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton – contributed to the “blue” wins.
Overall, Shapiro defeated Mastriano by a tally of 3,031,137 to 2,238,477 and Fetterman defeated Oz by a tally of 2,751,012 to 2,487,260.
