Monroe County man guilty in high-speed chase case

A Monroe County man was found guilty Friday on more than two dozen counts in a high-speed chase that injured two state troopers in 2021 - the second time the man has been found guilty in a high-speed chase case.

Martin A. Baboolal, 34, of Henryville, was found guilty of 13 counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony fleeing, one count of flight to avoid apprehension, 10 counts of recklessly endangering another person, felony institutional vandalism, 6 counts of accidents involving damage to a vehicle, one count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of criminal mischief.

The charges are from an incident on Sept. 13, 2021, when troopers from the state police at Stroudsburg barracks tried to stop a vehicle driven by Baboolal for a traffic violation. Baboolal had numerous warrants for his arrest, police said. Baboolal didn’t stop when officers tried to pull him over and fled on Route 611 in Pocono Township.

The pursuit was stopped after police lost sight of the vehicle.

The next day, Sept. 14, 2021, troopers tried to apprehend Baboolal on the outstanding warrants at a residence in East Stroudsburg, but he fled again, driving from East Stroudsburg through Paradise Township at high rates of speed during the chase.

He tried several times to hit pursuing police officers and drove his vehicle into six vehicles. Two troopers were seriously hurt but have recovered. Six other troopers were nearly hurt during the pursuit. No one from the public was injured.

After a three-day trial, the jury took 40 minutes on Friday to convict Baboolal, with Judge Jonathan Mark presiding over the case in Monroe County Court.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 13. Baboolal is in the Monroe County Correctional Center.

On Nov. 9, Baboolal was also convicted of felony fleeing and related offenses for leading state police officers and Pocono Township Police Department officers on a high speed pursuit in Pocono and Paradise townships. That incident happened on Oct. 22, 2020.

Both investigations were led by Trooper Jonathan Bailey.

Baboolal is serving a 56- to 114-month sentence for the first conviction.

Assistant District Attorney Christy Schlottman was the prosecutor on Baboolal’s most recent case.
