Mahoning anticipates tax increase next year

Mahoning Township residents appear headed for a tax increase next year.

The board of supervisors recently granted preliminary approval of the 2023 budget, which calls for a 1-mill increase.

If approved, that would raise the millage rate from 6.75 to 7.75 mills.

Supervisors said they plan to hire a full-time road department worker, as well as a full-time clerk.

The board is expected to approve the finalized budget when it meets at 6 p.m. Dec. 14.

The 2022 budget did not have a tax increase.

The $2,955,358 spending plan left the millage rate at 6.75 mills.

In November 2021, the board agreed on a 3-2 vote to purchase a new 2022 Ford pickup truck with a plow for the township’s road department for $39,995.

Township secretary Natalie Haggerty said at that time the township could afford the truck by squeezing $10,000 out of this year’s road machinery fund.

Haggerty said at that time the township would have to take out a bank lease.

As a result, it was projected the township may have to pass a half-mill tax increase in 2023 to afford the truck.
