Tamaqua organization prepares ‘Giving Tree’ for community

A Tamaqua organization is again working to make sure the community stays warm.

Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet will have its “Giving Tree” program at Depot Square Park at the Five Points Intersection in Tamaqua.

The Giving Tree - which folks “decorate” with cold weather accessories - will begin accepting donations at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8.

“We encourage individuals and families to join us filling The Giving Tree,” said Tammy Sienkiewicz, of Safer Streets. “We will collect hats, gloves, scarfs, and socks for men, women, children and infants.”

The items will be hung on a large evergreen tree in the park, and will be available for anyone in need to take.

“We expect to place over 1,200 items on the tree especially with the ever-rising fuel heating prices and the high price of our basic needs to live,” Sienkiewicz said.

The Giving Tree project is in its seventh year and will continue through the first week of February.

Sienkiewicz said the organization mailed letters asking for assistance.

“Many local businesses answered our support letter mailed in the beginning of November,” she said.

Others purchased items for the tree through an online registry with Walmart.

“We are very grateful for the support to keep our community warm,” Sienkiewicz said.

Monetary donations can be made by visiting www.saferstreetstamaqua.com and clicking on the large “donate” button.

The link to the Walmart registry can be found on Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet Facebook page. Items purchased through the link can be shipped directly to Safer Streets.

The Tamaqua Borough Council recently approved a request from Safer Streets to use the Depot Square tree.
