Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners acted on the following items during their weekly meeting on Thursday.

• Approved the 2023 meeting schedule. The weekly commissioners meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday except Aug. 10 and Nov. 23. The meetings for those two days are canceled. Salary board will take place the first Thursday of the month; election board, the second Thursday; and retirement board, the third Thursday.

• Approved a special commissioners meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 5 to set the salaries of the elected officials for 2026-2027.

• Approved the animal shelter municipal fee assessment for 2023 based on the 2020 census. It totals $12,000, a $3,362 increase since the 2010 census. The fee is paid by municipalities to help support the shelter operations and costs associated to responding to calls in their territories.

• Approved an engagement letter from Babst, Calland, Clements and Zomnir PC of State College to represent the county in the action involving David Ball et al v. Leigh M. Chapman et al, King’s Bench application filed in Commonwealth Court.

Solicitor Robert Frycklund said the case is regarding mail-in ballots that are returned undated or incorrectly dated. Carbon County was one of 14 counties represented by the firm and is waiting the written decision of the courts.

• Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that a job fair will be held for correctional officers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the correctional facility, 331 Broad St., Nesquehoning.

Interviews will be held on the spot and positions start at $18.46 per hour with a benefits package and retirement pension.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be over 18 and must bring valid driver’s license, social security card and a check or cash in the amount of $148 for refundable deposit for screenings.
