Nesquehoning Borough Council discusses plowing

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during the monthly meeting on Wednesday.

• Councilman Louis Paul reiterated that the borough is only responsible for clearing a driving lane on the streets during a snowstorm after being questioned by a resident.

“If people cooperate we will try to plow curb to curb,” he said, noting that the borough receives complaints about the plows pushing snow on sidewalks, people not moving their vehicles and equipment damage as reasons for trying it this way this winter.

Paul said that it will be at the driver’s discretion when clearing the street. If all cars are moved, then they may do curb to curb.

He said the borough will see how this works since other years have been filled with complaints over the drivers doing their jobs.

• Approved the sale of a 2011 F550 with a blown motor for $16,600.

• Voted 4-2 against purchasing an excavator for $79,000 at this time.

• Announced that there are vacancies on both the recreation commission and water authority board. The borough is now accepting letters of interest to fill these vacancies.

• Councilwoman Lois Kuba announced that the Nesquehoning VFW is hosting a hunters breakfast, beginning at 4 a.m. on Nov. 26. To register for the breakfast, call the VFW at 570-669-9201 by Nov. 24. There is a cost.

• The borough Christmas tree Lighting will take place at 6 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the tree along West Catawissa Street across from Turkey Hill. Everyone is invited to attend. Following the lighting, Meed’s church will hold caroling and refreshments.
