St. Luke’s expands emergency dept.

St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Carbon Campus has added more beds to its emergency department to meet the demand for emergency services in the area.

The site now has 30 rooms in its emergency department.

“The residents in this region can be confident that St. Luke’s Carbon Campus has the capacity and resources necessary to provide emergency care close to home,” said Joseph Pinto, chief operating officer at St. Luke’s Carbon Campus. “We are here for you when you need us most and when seconds matter.”

Marsha Estep, emergency room manager St. Luke’s Carbon Campus, explained the importance of the expansion.

“More ER beds were necessary,” Estep said. “We’re currently seeing an average of 50-70 patients daily.

“Our goal is keeping patients close to home by admitting patients at St. Luke’s Carbon rather than sending them to the Lehigh Valley area for treatment.”

Opened in November 2021, St. Luke’s Carbon Campus offers 24-hour critical care, chest pain and stroke center accreditation as well as general surgery.

Construction of the additional rooms began in January 2022.

Among the features of the St. Luke’s Carbon Campus emergency department, each room has its own walls and doors, allowing for privacy; cardiac monitors; a bed that can weigh patients for calculating prescription dosages; and a television to help patients pass the time while waiting for test results and treatment.

The expansion also has created jobs for nursing and ancillary staff.

The facility is just off the Mahoning Valley exit of the turnpike.
