Official clarifies voting in Carbon

Carbon County’s election director is warning people of a mailer that recommends early in-person voting.

Lisa Dart said her office received the mailer from a voter who came to the bureau asking about the letter.

According to the letter, which was sent by the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, voters have the options to vote three ways: by mail, on Election Day or voting early in person until 5 p.m. on Nov. 1.

Dart said that the third option is not one readily available in Pennsylvania.

She said that voters can apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot, but cannot receive a ballot to vote simply by walking into the election bureau in Jim Thorpe.

She said that the application must be processed and a state identification verification must be completed before a voter can be issued a ballot.

This process, Dart said, can take up to one hour if a person wants to wait.

The voter can then vote their ballot and return to an election bureau employee.

“Please be advised that in Pennsylvania, polling places are not open for early voting,” Dart said. “Polling places are only open on Election Day.”

The General Election is Nov. 8.
