Lansford crossing guard gets 4-year contract

Lansford Council recently passed a motion to approve the contract for the only crossing guard in borough. It will be a four-year contract with pay raises.

The raise will be 4% this year, sliding down to 3% in the fourth year of the contract, councilman William Chuma said.

Council also announced it received a special event form from the Friends of Lansford Recreation to hold “Plantfest” on April 29. A similar event was held in August at Kennedy Park. The event included plants, art, and craft vendors, food, face painting, and yoga classes.

In other business, bids for heating oil were to be opened at the meeting, but council did not receive any bids so it will be advertised a second time.

The council did receive a notice that the estimated allocation of fuel for next year will be $115,200.40.

The American Fire Company report for September shows the fire company responded to 7 calls for a total of 43 for the year. For the month of September, total man hours put in by firefighters was 233 hours. “For year-to-date,” council vice president John Turcmanovich said, “the guys over there have contributed of their own time 1,063 hours in training and service.”

The Lehighton Ambulance reported it responded to 73 calls in September in Lansford.

The borough tax collector reported collecting $12,663.51 during September.

Mayor Hugh Vrablic reported $610 from the magistrate, police responded to 276 calls and there were 61 parking tickets issued.

Turcmanovich said that police officer Calvin Rick, who was hired during the pandemic, passed his Civil Service exams.
