Seeing orange

Students in the PV Elementary School should be seeing a lot of orange today in light of the school celebrating Unity Day and being encouraged to wear orange on this day.

Supper tonight

A free community supper is being served at Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, from 5 to 6 p.m. today.

The menu is to be turkey BBQ sandwiches, seasoned vegetables, cranberry sauce, crudite with dip and a dessert.

Rachel’s Challenge

Thursday evening, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m., at the Pleasant Valley High School, for ages 12 and older, folks are invited: to hear the incredible story of Rachel Scott who was the first victim in the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999.

Her life, writings and legacy have become the basis for Rachel’s Challenge and her story has been shared around the world. Rachel’s message of kindness, compassion, acceptance and respect promote a positive school culture which leads to academic success.

Busy Legion site

Post 927 of the American Legion in Brodheadsville has a busy calendar week ahead.

Activities include: Boy Scout Troop 102 Committee meeting, at 7 ; Honor Guard Post 927 practice at 6 p.m., Thursday; West End Home Association NFL Sunday at 1 p.m.; Meat Raffle Monday, at 6 p.m.; West End Home Association Night Football; and Tuesday, at 7 p.m., the American Legion‘s monthly meeting.

Love letters

The Western Pocono Community Library continues with its Letters of Love to provide cards of support to children battling critical illness.

Card making supplies will be in the café every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Hoagie sale

McMichaels UMC is holding a hoagie sale. One must order by tomorrow at 610-597-1030 and pick up from 11 a.m. to noon, Oct. 27, at the church, on the corner of Rt. 715 and White Church Road.

PVI PTO meets

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School’s PTO is scheduled to meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday.

PVSD Board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education is slated to meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

Harvest Hustle set

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate PTO will benefit from a Harvest Hustle event being held at PVI outdoors during the school day on Friday, weather permitting. If it rains it will be held on Friday following.

All students may participate ad are encouraged to wear fall colors.

It is a fundraiser and funds may be used for: student and family activities or events, recess equipment, school supplies, etc.

Students walk/run laps/jog and enjoy fall-themed game and refreshments and possibly earn prizes.

Soup & bake sale

McMichaels UMC is holding a homemade soup and bake sale from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m., Saturday. A large variety of soups and baked goods will be available.

Beverages and hot dogs will also be on sale.

PVEN cheesecake sale

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is holding its annual Thanksgiving cheesecake sale now through Nov. 11.

Orders must be in by Nov. 11. Being offered are the following flavors: peanut butter cup, Oreo cookie, plain, pumpkin and raspberry swirl.

Pickup is at PVEN Nov. 21 or Nov. 22. To order, call the PVEN at 570-992-3136.

Current pantry needs at PVEN include: packaged french fried onions, mashed potatoes and turkeys, as well as turkey breasts.

Trunk or Treat

American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a Trunk or Treat event at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 29.

Sign-ups are due by Sunday at the Post.

C’hill Halloween

The township is hosting a Halloween Spooktacular from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 22.

It includes Story Time, pumpkin painting, face painting and balloon animals, apple cider press demo, costume contest.

Saturday dinner

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, is offering a drive-through roast beef dinner, complete with dessert, from 3:30 to 7 p.m., Saturday.

Reservations are requested, but not mandatory.

Guest preacher

Pastor Craig Laubach will be in St. Peter’s UMC pulpit at the 10 a.m. service this Sunday sharing his message.

After the service all present are invited to attend a coffee hour immediately following the service.

Eldred Township Historical Society is hosting a gift card bingo Sunday at St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown. There is a cost for playing. For more information, contact the church or the Eldred Historical Society.

PVEN sign-ups

From Sept. 2 to Oct. 28, PVEN will be accepting applications for its annual Angel Tree Program. Applications for the Toys for Tots program will be accepted through Nov. 30. Angel Tree applicants are automatically registered for Toys for Tots.

In light of the high volumes of clients at the West End Food Pantry in Kunkletown and reportedly not having enough food, the Pleasant Valley Elementary School is hosting a can drive for spaghettios through Oct. 28.

Fair Trade sale

From Oct. 29 through Oct. 30, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will host a Fair Trade fundraising sale in Partnership with SERRV international. The sale will be a fundraiser that will benefit the parish’s St. Martin De Porres Charity account.

The sale is also online through Dec. 3. The parish will receive a certain commission, but one must use the weblink https://www.servv.org?a=QOPFTsale in order for the parish to receive the donation.

The fundraiser will be available today through Dec. 3.

Trick or Trash

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering Trick or Trash program at 10 a.m., Oct. 29. Participants will learn some tips on making Halloween a more sustainable one and create a craft using recycled materials and even enjoy some treats. There is a cost per person.

Baby shower held

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s Altar & Rosary Society is holding its annual baby shower to support the Shepherd Maternity House.

Needed are diapers, wipes, onesies, baby shampoo, receiving blankets, outfits.

Donations may be placed in the wooden cradle in the atrium or on the table with the shower sign in the hall of the church.

Not being accepted are: car seats, high chairs or baby furniture.

Valor visit

Volunteers from Valor are slated to be at Kinsley’s in Brodheadsville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 4, where the organization is accepting donations of nonperishable items for its holiday meals program and can answer questions about the Valor program.

Also being accepted are gift cards for its holiday meal program.

Pie crust sale

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is again accepting orders for homemade pie crusts, single crust, packaged individually in aluminum pie tins. The orders must be in by Oct. 31.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting the family band, MJM7, at 7 p.m., Nov. 7, in McCawley Hall. That band is comprised of Michael James Mette, and his children: Charity, Cecilia and MJ.

The concert is free but donations are being accepted.

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity’s volunteers are to be feted at the Nov. 10 Volunteer Appreciation Event at Shawnee Inn. Volunteers’ meals are free.
