Donations accepted for displaced family
Donations are being sought for a Tamaqua family whose home and its contents were destroyed by a Monday morning fire.
“Our world is upside down right now and not really sure where to start to pick up the pieces,” Cheryl Sitlinger posted on social media.
The fire broke out at 528 Arlington St., and jumped to the 530 Arlington St. home Cheryl shares with her husband, Matt, and their children, Bella, Sophia and Garrett.
While the family was not harmed, the family lost two pet cats and a hamster.
“I was on the operating table when it happened having a pretty in-depth procedure done. I woke up to the news in the hospital,” she wrote on Facebook. “I am numb! We are numb!”
Contacted Wednesday, Cheryl said the family is doing “as good as it can be at this point.”
And while she is grateful for that, she said they lost “pretty much everything.”
In the wake of the fire, Cheryl said she’s been asked where and how to donate. She set up a Venmo of @Cheryl-Sitlinger, and the family’s temporary address is 189 Owl Creek Road, Tamaqua, Pa., 18252.
She had been asking for clothing and shoes for the family, and said that many had stepped up to fill those requests.
“Again, I am definitely not used to accepting help or asking for help. This post is very difficult for me to make. Please know, we are so very grateful,” Cheryl wrote.
“The Sitlinger Family Fire Relief” fund has been set up on GoFundMe.com. On it, organizers note that the Sitlingers “are important members of the community, supporting Tamaqua PTO and Tamaqua Area Youth Soccer.”
Because they have nowhere to store large items, Cheryl said the family appreciates monetary donations or gift cards.
“I was in surgery when it happened and have not really been able to go through much right now to see what we have and don’t have at this point,” she said.
Cheryl said the family is overwhelmed by the community’s kindness.
“They always say ... you have no idea how many friends and Family you have until something like this happens. It is so true ... you guys are amazing!!!,” she wrote on Facebook.
