4 hikes on tap at state parks

Several hikes are planned in October into November for the two state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.

• On Thursday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 a.m. a hike to explore the mountain behind Locust Lake State Park and visit Silver Creek Fire Tower will be held. The hike is 5 miles and moderate in difficulty. The pine stands and brush are perfect habitat for birds and other wildlife. Participants will meet in the visitor parking lot of Locust Lake just before the contact station at 10:15 a.m. and then travel to another area for the hike. Bring a lunch. All pets must be leashed and get along with people and other pets. Canceled if raining. Must pre-register by calling Robin Tracey at 570-467-2506.

• A hike to Leaser Lake will be Oct. 20 at 10:30 a.m., led by a park naturalist from Tuscarora State Park. The hike will take participants to a new place to explore. The meeting place is at the north boat ramp at 7826 Ontelaunee Road in New Tripoli. The hike is 5 miles and moderate in difficulty. The Liberty trail winds around the 117 acre lake. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Bring a lunch. Canceled if raining. Pre-registration is required by calling 570-467-2506.

• A long loop hike at Tuscarora State Park is set for Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. It will be held on the Crow, Lake View and Spirit trails. The hike is 7 miles and moderate in difficulty. The hike combines the best of the trails in Tuscarora State Park. Meet in the Crow Trail parking lot off Tuscarora Mountain Road. This is a dog friendly hike, but all pets must be leashed and get along with other pets and people. Pre-register at 570-467-2506. No walk-ins. Canceled if raining. Bring a lunch.

• There will be a river lands fall foliage hike at the Riverlands in Berwick on Nov. 1. The trail is 5 miles and runs next to the Susquehanna River, two ponds and a large wetland area. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Riverlands Educational building at 634 Salem Blvd., Berwick. Registration required by calling 570-467-2506. Bring a lunch and water. Dogs are not allowed in the wetlands portion of the park. Canceled if raining.
