Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 26

Lehighton’s boys soccer team recorded a key victory on Monday, while the Indians also earned a win in field hockey action.

Elsewhere, Jim Thorpe’s volleyball team kept rolling with another win. The Northwestern and Pleasant Valley volleyball teams also recorded victories.

BOYS SOCCER

Lehighton-North Schuylkill

A.J. Light’s hat trick highlighted Lehighton clinching a District 11 playoff berth in a 3-0 victory over North Schuylkill in Schuylkill League play.

Mason Marchessault assisted two of Light’s goals in the win for the Indians (9-4). Nick Zeigenfuss also added an assist for Lehighton, while Bryce Miller recorded six saves in the shutout.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Tamaqua’s second-half surge fell a bit short, as Pottsville escaped with a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory.

Trailing 2-1 at half thanks to two goals from Pottsville’s Nicholas Giuffre, Jacob Schlier pulled the Blue Raiders within reach with a goal early in the second half.

Then, after the Tide took a 3-1 lead midway through the final half, Jathan Krall posted a late goal for the locals.

Jonathan Ulicny grabbed three saves for the Blue Raiders, while Aidan Kostyal ended up with eight saves for Pottsville.

Tamaqua slips to 4-7 overall (4-4 SL), while Pottsville moves to 4-8 (2-6).

GIRLS SOCCER

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Schuylkill Haven rolled to an 8-0 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

Danielle Gordon scored the lone goal for the Lady Wreckers (2-8).

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

Parkland cruised to a 5-0 win over Pleasant Valley in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Elayna Kocker led the undefeated Trojans (11-0) with two goals. Regan Blellen, Segal Wellington and Dani Marstellar also scored for Parkland.

Pleasant Valley (7-5-1) goalkeepers Mya Mangio and Sadie Rizzo both made several impressive saves in the match.

VOLLEYBALL

Palmerton-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe remained undefeated thanks to a three-set 25-7, 25-10, 25-15 non-league victory over visiting Palmerton.

Maggy Hallihan had 27 assists, 26 service points, 10 aces and five digs for the Olympians (11-0). Priscilla Patton (eight kills, three service points), Leah Figura (four kills, two aces, four digs, four service points), Kelsey Patton (four kills, three aces, five service points, three blocks) and Brooke Mitzen (12 kills) all played a role in keeping JT undefeated.

Caylee Strohl led the Bombers (2-8) with five digs, while Alexis Hess and Jess Heydt both chipped in with three kills, and Emily Christopher added two blocks.

Blue Mountain-Northwestern

Senior Brooke Dwane put up 35 digs and two aces in Northwestern’s 3-0 victory over Blue Mountain.

Shannon Green had 30 assists and eight digs for the Tigers (8-2), while Jenna Breininger also recorded 14 kills and two aces.

Pleasant Valley-Dieruff

Pleasant Valley only needed three sets to come away with a 25-2, 25-6, 25-12 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Dieruff.

Brianna Bruckman sparked the Bears on the attack with 11 assists, three digs and two aces, while Nora Jones chipped in with five kills, three aces and two digs.

Jackie James (four kills, two assists, two digs, one ace) and Alexis Wilkes (four assists, two aces) also helped the Bears move to 6-5 overall (6-5 EPC).

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven

Schuylkill Haven swept Tamaqua 25-16, 25-24, 25-16 in Schuylkill League play.

Ashlyn Houser had five aces and three digs for the Raiders. Lacey Beers also added nine digs, while Sarah Coccio put up four blocks for Tamaqua (1-13).

Schuylkill Haven also won the JV match, 3-0.

Lehighton-PM West

Pocono Mountain West posted a 25-19, 25-10, 17-25, 27-25 non-league win over Lehighton.

Madelyn Sofranko recorded 16 assists for the Indians. Haley Ginder had seven kills and three aces for Lehighton (4-8).

Lily Kershner put up five kills and five blocks, while Lorah Thomas had three aces and three kills in the loss. Lyla Kershner also had six digs for Lehighton.

FIELD HOCKEY

Bangor-Lehighton

Lehighton knocked off Bangor for a 2-1 victory.

Gabby Brown got the Indians on the board with a second-period goal, while Megan Pagotto added an insurance goal in the third period.

Megan Engle posted the Slaters’ lone goal in the third period.

Grayson Frey finished with two saves for the Indians, while LiYanna Hackler ended up with four saves for the Slaters.

Lehighton improves to 4-7 overall, while Bangor falls to 5-6-1 on the season.

Freedom-Northern Lehigh

Freedom posted a 3-1 win over Northern Lehigh in non-league action.

Addison Cieri scored on an assist from Zoe Hathaway for the Bulldogs (0-12).

GIRLS TENNIS

Tamaqua-MMI Prep

MMI Prep edged Tamaqua 3-2.

Tamaqua took the first doubles match with Helen Florea and Gabby Erho posting a win, but dropped the second doubles match to MMI Prep.

Brooke Williams scored the singles victory for Tamaqua (2-7). The two schools face each other again Tuesday.
