Students taking Spanish I and III at Palmerton Area High School will be doing so through a Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit eLearn course while the district continues its pursuit of a full-time teacher.
Palmerton’s Spanish teacher, Lisa Failla, resigned in mid-July to take a position at Parkland High School.
“Our students are currently receiving their Spanish instruction online through a program provided by the CLIU,” Jamie Schuler, Palmerton’s assistant to the superintendent, said Tuesday. “The CLIU does assign a teacher to the course, and that teacher is available for questions and any help that may be needed, but the work is asynchronous for the students.”
Students report to a regular classroom during their Spanish course, where a Palmerton employee sits in to monitor it.
The program, Schuler said, costs the district $138 per student. Palmerton has two sections of Spanish 1 and one section of Spanish III.
“We’re still actively looking for a Spanish teacher and we’re hopeful that we can transition from the eLearn program back to a teacher in our classroom for the second semester,” Schuler said.
The job remains posted on Palmerton’s human resources website at https://bit.ly/3dw3Qk8.
