Crossing Guard Dilemma

I have a solution for the crossing guard dilemma that seems to be plaguing some of out local communities.

Re-establish the student Safety Patrol that was a staple of my youth.

Fifth and sixth grade students who volunteered to serve were assigned to busy traffic intersections near school and reported there 15 minutes prior to the start of school.

They were sponsored by AAA, who equipped them with large silver badges pinned to a wide white canvas cross belt.

As a member, I proudly held out my arms to allow student crossing.

We were rewarded by the school and AAA by taking all guards to the Philadelphia Athletics baseball game at Shibe Park in North Philadelphia. One of the players on the team was Palmerton native Elmer Valo, known for his hitting and fence-crashing.

There was NO COST for the school system because of the sponsorship.

Surely some business could step up now.

Maybe the students involved could see the likes of Bryce Harper as a reward for their service and dedication.
