Weissport couple tells council about rat problem

Weissport residents Larry and Judy Dreher told council members of an increasing problem with rats in the borough, especially behind their house on Bridge Street.

“There are rats all over the borough,” Larry Dreher said. “I’ve heard it from different people, actually some people on this board right here. I think it should be addressed.”

Dreher said the biggest problem is with abandoned cars in the borough. Some vehicles behind his house on Bridge Street had inspection stickers from 2017.

“Rats love to nest in stuff like that,” he said.

Another property behind his house has overgrown weeds and wild-growing vegetable plants which attract the pests, he said.

But the biggest issue, Dreher said, is the junk or abandoned vehicles on the properties along the alley behind Bridge Street.

Borough councilman James Osborne said if a vehicle is covered, he cannot go on the property about the vehicle. But if he can see it, then he can.

“Go up there tomorrow,” Dreher said. “They’re uncovered. If I can see them, so can you.”

Council passed a motion to purchase 20 more rat traps to replace broken ones around the borough and add additional traps. The borough will spend up to $350 for bait traps and the concrete blocks to hold them from Tractor Supply.

As far as enforcing codes in the borough, the code enforcement office, which is run by Barry Isett and Associates, needs to have complaints submitted in writing in order to investigate.

Call the borough office at 610-377-5606 to get a complaint form.
