A Monroe County woman lost more than $1,000 in a gift card scam, state police at Fern Ridge said.

The Stroudsburg woman, 67, was convinced to buy gift cards to make good for an

account of hers that the thief said was hacked.

Police said the woman received a text from someone who identified himself as an Amazon employee, instructing the woman to contact him by telephone because her Amazon account was hacked and there was a fraudulent charge on it.

Police said the woman provided her personal information to the man, who then told her she needed to purchase Apple gift cards to cover the cost of processing fees. He said the account would be credited for any out-of-pocket expenses.

After she provided the gift card numbers, the man didn’t return phone calls or texts to the victim.

The woman lost $1,319 through the scam.
