Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 8

Two Palmerton teams remained undefeated after gaining wins on Thursday.

The Blue Bombers’ golf and girls soccer squads both posted victories to keep their records perfect.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Four first-half goals sparked Jim Thorpe to a 6-1 Schuylkill League win over Pottsville.

Dawson Meckes led the Olympians with two goals and three assists, while Ivan Turzeniuk added a pair of goals and a helper.

Thorpe also received a goal and an assist from both Jacob Geiser and Noah Geiser. Olympian goalies Cael Heaney and Blake Barberio both made two saves.

The win lifted Jim Thorpe to 3-3 overall, and 2-2 in the league.

Lehighton-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain handed Lehighton its first loss of the season as the Eagles posted a 5-3 Schuylkill League victory.

AJ Light had a hat trick for the Indians, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Mason Marchessault assisted on one of Light’s goals.

Blue Mountain (4-2; 3-0) was led by Ryan Hundy, who scored three goals.

No. Lehigh-Catasauqua

Northern Lehigh and Catasauqua played to a 3-3 tie in Colonial League play.

Freshman Ethan Moore had all three goals on four shots for the Bulldogs, who are now 1-2-1.

Nolehi goalie Ethan Kunkle made 15 saves.

For the Rough Riders, Jaxon Berrier, Brendan Nye, and Xaiver Razon each had one goal.

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

Pine Grove’s Seiverling had two goals to help the Cardinals gain a 4-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Williams and Hall also tallied for the winners, who scored all their goals in the first half.

The loss dropped the Blue Raiders to 2-2.

GIRLS SOCCER

Catasauqua-No. Lehigh

Katelynn Barthold had a hat trick as Northern Lehigh rolled to an 8-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 4-1, registered 31 shots on goal compared to just two by the Rough Riders.

The winners also received goals from Caitlyn Kirk, Nicole Zarayko, Victoria Hanna, Kalei Fisher, and Mikayla Gordon.

The loss dropped Catty to 1-3.

Northwestern-Palisades

Northwestern remained undefeated in Colonial League play after posting a 3-0 victory over Palisades.

Sammy Bardonner and Cammy Fitch both had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, while Katie Brensinger accounted for the other goal.

Brook Balliet assisted on one of the tallies.

Northwestern goalie Naomi Glassberg had five saves in earning the shutout win.

The Tigers are now 6-1 overall, and 4-0 in the league, while Palisades fell to 2-4.

Palmerton-So. Lehigh

Emma Martinez and Beth Morgan each scored goals in the second half to lift undefeated Palmerton to a 2-0 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Emma Snyder registered six saves for the Blue Bombers, who upped their record to 5-0 overall, and 4-0 in the league.

Pine Grove-N. Schuylkill

The Lehighton boys and the Jim Thorpe girls both posted 3-0 records during a Schuylkill League quad meet.

The Olympians boys finished the day 2-1.

Thorpe’s Nicole Carroll finished first in the girls race with a time of 22:28, while teammate Gabby Cinicola placed fourth. Olivia Serfass was the Indians’ top runner with a 10th-place finish.

The Olympians’ Jordan Kemmel posted a second-place finish in a time of 18:30 in the boys competition, while Lehighton’s Owen Serfass was third and Elijah Pagotto followed in fourth.

The Tamaqua boys and girls both went 1-2 in a Schuylkill League quad meet.

In the boys race, Anthony Marchetti led the Blue Raiders with a third-place finish in a time of 18:49. Teammate Jesse Gormley added a ninth-place finish.

Mia Jones paced the Raider girls with a sixth-place finish, while teammate Sam Plasha crossed the line in 10th place.

East Stroudsburg South edged Pleasant Valley, 2-1, in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference contest.

Nora Kirkwood had a goal and an assist to lead the Cavaliers, while Alaina Casey accounted for South’s other tally.

For the Bears - who had an 11-6 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in corners - Mattison Hyland registered a goal.

The loss dropped PV to 2-3, while the Cavs improved to 1-4.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe evened its record at 3-3 after cruising to a 6-1 victory over Pottsville.

The Olympians received straight-set wins in singles play from Tara McLean, Hailey Trine, Chloe Tantala and Keira Reese.

Hager grabbed medalist honors, while teammates Connor Reinard (73) and Nate Steinmetz (77) helped the Blue Bombers remain unbeaten at 13-0 overall and 11-0 in the league.

Thomas Ubriaco had the top score for the Panthers (2-10-1) with a 77.

The Blue Raiders, who fell by only three strokes to the Bears, went 1-1 on the day with Peter McGinley gaining medalist honors with a 77. Lucas Milot also carded a solid score of 85.

PV’s Cody Orsulak had the low for his team with an 89.

Tamaqua is now 7-5, while the Panthers drop to 2-5. Mahanoy improved to 13-0.

Riley McArdle had seven kills, three aces, and six digs for the Panthers, while Emma Dacey added five digs, three kills, and one ace.

PV’s Abby Benacek also contributed seven assists and two digs.

For the Wreckers, Abby Paisley had three kills and two assists, Kelly Michaels had eight digs, and Taylor Davidovich chipped in with three digs.

The Panthers are now 4-1, while the Wreckers are 1-4.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian rebounded from a loss in the opening game to gain a 20-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-11 victory over Mahanoy Area in Schuylkill League action.

Megan Paisley had 17 digs, 15 aces, and 10 kills for the Fillies. Abbey Kluck added 18 digs and seven kills, while Julia Meiss finished with 29 assists and four digs.

Marian, which improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, also received seven kills, five digs and three aces from Jenna Goff, while Fatikha Tikhtova contributed five kills and seven blocks.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Pine Grove swept Lehighton 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 in Schuylkill League action.

Mia Snyder had nine assists for the Indians, while Haley Ginder finished with five kills and Madilyn Stoffey added four kills.

Lehighton slipped to 2-3 with the loss, while Pine Grove improved to 2-1.

Tamaqua-N. Schuylkill

North Schuylkill swept Tamaqua 25-19, 25-14, 25-12 in Schuylkill League competition.

Lacey Beers had 10 digs for the Blue Raiders, while Sarah Coccio had five blocks and an ace.

The loss dropped Tamaqua to 1-6.
