Indians win season opener

Lehighton’s volleyball team enjoyed a successful start to its season on Monday.

But despite a 25-15, 25-15, 25-13 victory over Palmerton, Indians’ head coach Jason Green knows there’s still work to do.

“We still have a way to go,” said Green. “We’ve still got to get our timing down, our communication, our consistency; stuff you’d expect at the beginning of the season.

“That comes with playing time and getting some more experience. We have some good leadership with our older players, so we’ll put it together. We’ll be there.”

Lehighton relied on its older players in the opening set against the Blue Bombers. After falling behind early by a 7-4 score, seniors Haley Ginder and Lily Kershner quickly erased the deficit. Ginder delivered two kills and Kershner came through with a pair of aces during a 6-0 run that gave the Indians a lead they would never lose.

Kershner also added a kill as Lehighton closed out the first game with a 6-1 stretch.

In the second game, Palmerton registered the first two points before the home team reeled off seven straight. Senior Madelyn Sofranko registered three aces in that span, while sophomore Makenna Snyder contributed a pair of kills.

The Bombers did manage to close the gap to 10-9, but five more aces - including two by Ginder - allowed Lehighton to pull away.

“Some of the stats that I got during the middle of the game ... we have kind of all areas that we need to work on,” said Green. “We just need to make sure that we’re getting a system and able to run our offense. We basically need to make sure our passes are there, getting the ball on target. Our consistency on serving also needs to get better.”

Lehighton’s serving improved in the final game, as the Indians finished off the sweep. After a combined 14 service errors in the first two sets, Green’s club only had three in the final one. They received aces from four different players, and kills from five.

“We’re a team,” said Green. “We do this together. Our goal is to get into the playoffs and see what materializes from there.

“This team is very close ... They understand we have to play together and play as one. We can’t have any separation. We’re all playing toward the same goal, so we need to be on the same page.”

While Lehighton strives for the postseason with six seniors on its roster, Palmerton is just looking to get better one match at a time.

“Hopefully as we go through the season we’ll improve,” said Blue Bomber head coach Marsha Thomas, who only has one 12th-grader on her club. “We played well against Tamaqua in our opener. Lehighton, however, is a better team. We just have to build on it.

“I’ve got some young kids on the floor ... If there’s one high point, I think the JV team did an excellent job tonight.”

INDIAN STATS ... Ginder had seven kills to pace the winners, while Makenna Snyder finished with four and Kershner had three. Sofranko led all players with six aces, with Kershner and Lorah Thomas both contributing four.

UP NEXT ... Lehighton (1-0) hosts Lourdes this evening, while Palmerton (1-1) will compete in the North Schuylkill tournament on Saturday.
