Woman rescued from island in Lehigh River in Mahoning

A woman rafter was successfully rescued after being stranded on an island in the Lehigh River in Mahoning Township Tuesday afternoon.

Township fire Chief Mark Ebbert said the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the Lehigh River north of the Packerton Yards section.

“We were told a female was stranded on an island on the river,” Ebbert said. “She was coming down the river and got separated from her boyfriend.”

Ebbert said they were able to locate the woman on the island. They walked the river and walked up the path and came down the river bank to the river and made contact with her while Lehighton Fire Department deployed its boat to come down the river.

He said the woman was not injured.

“The rescue was fine,” Ebbert said. “But people should make sure when they’re on the river that they have life jackets, and are using the proper equipment no matter what their swimming abilities are.”

Ebbert said also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Ambulance and Mahoning Township Police Department.
