Carbon inmate sent to state prison for bringing drugs to jail

A Carbon County woman, who previously admitted her part in bringing illegal substances into the county prison, was sentenced on Friday to a state prison term.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II sentenced Janine April Sarau, 31, of Jim Thorpe, to serve 15 to 36 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of criminal conspiracy - contraband. In a second case, on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, she was sentenced to serve two to 12 months in a state prison, concurrent with the first count.

She was arrested on the conspiracy charge on June 27, 2020, at the county prison, by county detectives. The paraphernalia charge was for an incident on June 19, 2021, filed by state police at Lehighton.

Nanovic rejected a request to sentence Sarau to a county prison term. In addition to her part in bringing drugs into the prison he noted she tested positive for illegal substance on June 9 plus has had several problems at the jail following the rules.

In addition to the jail term Nanovic ordered her to get both mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, supply a DNA sample and pay court costs of over $1,000.

She was given credit for 357 days already served on the charges.
