Carbon certifies results, clears ballot issue

Carbon County’s primary election results are officially certified.

On Thursday, the county election board voted to certify the votes, which included the recount of the U.S. Senate race between Mehmet Oz and Dave McCormick.

Based on the statewide recount, Oz defeated McCormick by just 951 votes.

He will now serve as the Republican candidate in the general election and face off against Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who won in May, for the seat currently held by Sen. Pat Toomey, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Lisa Dart, county elections director, said that Carbon County’s figures were only one off from the primary night results because someone voted for two and crossed one off.

“That’s what changed, literally one vote difference in the recount, as opposed to the original count,” Dart said.

She noted that all ballots were rescanned on different machines and were accurate.

“We didn’t have any issues,” Dart said.

She added that the election ran smoothly, thanks to a good team.

Mail-in ballots

One issue Dart brought up regarding mail-in ballots was due to a vendor the county hired to handle the mailings.

She said the company is from New York and her office was receiving complaints because of the ballot being postmarked from another state.

“They were getting them to people within four days,” she said, adding that her office wasn’t even achieving that when it was handled in-house.

“They saved us a ton of money from the last election.”

Registered or not?

Dart also reminds residents that if you received a ballot for the primary election, you will automatically get one for the general election.

“If you’re not sure, please don’t wait until the week before,” she said. “Call our office and check now.”
