Grants sought for bodycams, police vehicle

Nesquehoning is hoping to obtain grants to purchase body cameras and a new vehicle for its police department.

On Wednesday, borough council voted to pursue two grants that would help pay for the items.

The body cameras are under a 60-month program and would cost approximately $7,106 per year. The grant application for this project is due in July.

On the vehicle grant through the USDA, the borough said that it could try for either grant funding, or a low-interest loan through the program to purchase the new vehicle.

One of the older police cruisers would then be decommissioned.

Mayor Tom Kattner said that he thinks the grants would be a great thing in helping the department secure the equipment they need.

“It’s a big, big thing that could be good for the town,” Kattner said regarding the body cameras.

In other police matters, council approved moving forward with reflecting lettering the police Dodge Durango so residents knew police were patrolling. The Durango is currently unmarked.

The motion gave Council President David Hawk permission to approve a quote up to $1,500 that he receives from the company that recently lettered the zoning enforcement vehicle.
