Display fireworks rule suggested

John Barborek of Prograde Fireworks Co., suggested Eldred Township should have an ordinance for display fireworks.

He said display fireworks are federally regulated and are not sold in his stores. The only people who are allowed to use them are professional pyrotechnicians who are licensed by the federal government. Residents should not be able to purchase display fireworks.

Township solicitor Mike Gaul said state law does give municipalities the right to require a permit for display fireworks, and a display fireworks ordinance is something municipalities should have in place.

Supervisor Scott Clark said, “We would love to see something for consumer grade fireworks, but we can’t enforce it. Maybe we need to concentrate on display fireworks.”

Planning Chairman Robert Boileau said he is still interested in an ordinance for consumer grade fireworks, but there isn’t an urgency in the matter.
