Man tries to burn off mold, ends up in prison

Bleach, borax, baking soda, tea tree oil and vinegar have all been touted as home remedies to deal with mold, but one Tamaqua man felt that heat was the best solution.

Tamaqua police and firefighters were dispatched to 409 W. Broad St. at 1:38 a.m. Wednesdayfor a smoke detector activation. The alarm pinpointed Apt. 1 as the source. Personnel arrived within minutes of the call and could see smoke billowing from the apartment and attempted to enter the apartment, which was locked with a man inside. The man refused to come out of the apartment or open the door, telling firefighters to "go away."Police breached the door and found Brian Keith Haas inside. Haas continued to refuse to leave the apartment and had to physically be removed from the smoke-filled scene. There were no flames but firefighters found a pile of burned clothes and burn marks on the floors and walls, as well as a hole burned through one area of the floor.Haas told police he was trying to remedy a mold problem. He lit a piece of paper, then threw it on the mold in an attempt to burn it out.Instead of killing the mold, a pile of clothing and a baseboard caught fire.Haas was charged with three felony counts of arson, a felony charge of risking a catastrophe and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He was arraigned before duty District Judge James Reilly, of Pottsville, who set bail at $50,000 straight cash, earning him a stay in the Schuylkill County prison in Pottsville.
