Summit Hill fire company honors 48-year member
Twenty-years ago, the Diligence Fire Company in Summit Hill began presenting an annual "Firefighter of the Year" award. The award was named after Paul "Paulky" Yuricheck, a longtime treasurer who was active in various aspects of the department.
"It always symbolized dedication, commitment and honor," said Fire Chief Shawn Hoben. That's why we decided to name it after Paul."Saturday night, the person for whom the award is named was the surprise recipient.Yuricheck, who is suffering from cancer and recently became a guest at the Hometown Nursing Home, was brought to the fire company for its annual Christmas party and to receive the "Firefighter of the Year" award.Yuricheck, who has been active in the fire company for 48 years, also received a plaque from the fire company during the Memorial Day program in May.At that time, former fire chief Carl Gray (1980-1985) told Yuricheck, "You've been a real important part of Diligence Fire Company for a long time."Yuricheck was especially praised for his countless hours helping the fire department with fundraising endeavors.Hoben said, "This (the fire company) was his life. That's why we exist today; because of such dedication by people like Paul."Fire company President Ed Nunemacher said Yuricheck also helped with maintaining the history of the fire company.Summit Hill resident Jess Kutza was also honored Saturday with the annual "Friend of the Firefighters" award.Kutza was instrumental in getting items for the fire department's Chinese auction.She also is involved with various other organizations, including the American Cancer Society.The fire department's "Business of the Year" award was presented to Outen Chevrolet of Hamburg.Hoben said Outen donates a car every year for the fire department's annual golf tournament.Numerous firefighters were honored for their time spent training and responding to alarms during the year.
